Small pools of fresh blood were still evident on the pavement at around midday.

A local resident was woken at approximately 8am by the sound of a fight in Tench Street which spilled onto Wapping Green itself.

Speaking exclusively to the East End Enquirer the witness said that at first they were not sure what the sounds were but on looking out of the window saw a group of young men assaulting another man.

One of the men was beating the victim with a weapon approximately a foot long.

Towards the end of the assault the victim was on the ground.
