£500m in the bank gathering dust (and no interest)
While you read the Moley Morsels below please remember that Tower Hamlet council still has £500,000,000 in the bank. Yep, £500m.
Anyway…
More LTN lies as council tries to fool the cops
Can someone tell the council it is really daft idea to not be straight with the Met Police? ‘Cos they are the police.
Despite numerous assertions by various Labour councillors that the emergency services are always consulted when a new Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) is planned this does not seem to be, well, true.
The Met has objected to Tower Hamlets Labour’s road closures around the Jesus Green / Columbia Road saying it does not have access through lockable bollards and area is severely restricted.
It seems the Council has not responded to police requests for further information – maybe a night in cells is called for? Just a thought officer.
Mayor makes £600,000 grants decision all by himself
Seems Mayor Biggs can’t decide if he likes being directly-elected Mayor or not. One moment he does, the next minute he is all for collective cabinet responsibility.
One example of this is the decision over the part of a £3m scheme to make the borough wonderful again after the pandemic.
The Summer Programme is a mere £600,000 of this which will include £44,500 for ‘Marking the pandemic’ events. Seriously.
Why do we need to blow money on marking an event we all want to forget? Anyhow the Mayor has decided the allocation of funds for the Summer Programme is so important only he and he alone can make the decision.
Biggs to shut Cubitt Town Library
Remember this story from November last year? Tower Hamlets plans to close all borough Idea Stores & libraries
Well for a while it looked like Cubitt Town library was for the chop, then it seemed it was not but now it definitely is being closed.
This little gem was spotted during the week.
Apsana Begum trial date
Poplar and Limehouse Labour MP Apsana Begum will stand trial on three counts of fraud at Snaresbrook Crown Court on July 21. Ms. Begum denies all charges.
The trial is expected to last eight days and if she is found guilty a byelection may be triggered.
Ohid and Lutfur hissy fit
Moley has been told that ex-Deputy Mayor Ohid Ahmed has been having a bit of a hissy fit with ex-Mayor Lutfur Rahman.
Seems Ohid is more than a little annoyed that he is not being allowed to stand for Mayor of Tower Hamlets next time round in place of his lord and master Lutfur.
Ohid reckons he is owed a Mayoral run for his many years service to Lutfur.
Mole gets the feeling that Lutfur thinks he does not owe anything to anybody.
£500m
Tower Hamlet council has £500,000,000 in the bank. Did we mention this?
